Sustainable Maryland and its program partners regularly host trainings and events that support progress toward Sustainable Maryland certification. In general, events posted on the calendar are FREE or of minimal cost.

SM Sustainability Tours in WALKtober
Saturday, Oct. 4, 10:30am-12:30pm
Royal Ports of the Eastern Shore Tour: Town of Chestertown
This walking tour (1.5 miles) of a medium-sized town (population 5,000) will include:
- farmers market (open during tour)
- native plant garden at local elementary school
- electric vehicle charging stations
- Sultana wetland preserve/walking trail
- rails to trails w/ public art
- Washington College's Seimen Griswold Center "living building" with composting drop-off site
- living shoreline at Wilmer Park
- Modern Stone Age Kitchen, a sustainable business
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 4:00-6:00pm
On the Banks of the Patuxent Tour: City of Laurel
This walking and shuttle bus tour of a medium-sized city (population 30,000) will include:
- demonstration of the Foamstream, an herbicide-free, eco-friendly system to combat weeds
- battery-powered landscaping equipment – explanation of equipment and the “charging” trailers
- eco-friendly small organics recycling truck
- overview of the Rehrig Pacific Visual Verification collection system installed on trash/recycling and compost truck
- farmer’s market
- first city-owned public parking lot with permeable pavement, solar lights and EV charging stations
- BigBelly trash, recycling and new organics composting units
- Gude Mansion revitalization and green improvements
Wednesday, Oct. 22, 4:00-5:30pm
Head of the Chesapeake Bay Tour: City of Havre de Grace
This walking and electric shuttle tour of a small city (population 13,000) will include:
- pollinator gardens
- community garden
- food forest
- living shoreline
- stormwater filtration tree boxes
- Harmer's Town art community
- composting center
- EV charging stations
- solar-power municipal buildings
